Frequently Asked Questions

Preventive Health & Vaccinations

How often should I bring my pet for a routine check-up?

At least once a year; every 6 months for pets over 7 years old or with chronic disease.

Dogs: Rabies and core (DHPPL) are legally required. Lyme, Corona (CCV) and Bordetella/kennel-cough can be added annually if risk warrants.
Cats: Rabies and core (FVRCP) are mandatory; FeLV is given according to lifestyle risk.

Give the rabies booster 12 months after the initial series and every year thereafter. The core vaccine follows its standard 1–3 year cycle (risk-based). Lyme, Corona and Bordetella boosters are also repeated yearly when indicated.

Cats: 5–6 months. Small-breed dogs: 6–9 months. Large breeds: 9–12 months.

Internal parasites: broad-spectrum tablet every 2 months.
External parasites (flea/tick spot-on or tablet): monthly, especially in summer.

Acute Symptoms & Emergencies

When do vomiting or diarrhea become dangerous?

If they last over 24 h, contain blood, or the pet is lethargic—come in immediately.

Note the amount, call us at once; vomiting induction or activated charcoal may be needed ASAP.

Yes. Record a short video and bring your cat in right away—wheezing often signals serious airway trouble.

If lameness persists > 24 h or swelling/pain increases, an orthopedic exam and X-ray are required.

Come in if the infestation is heavy or you see pale gums, weakness, or fever—signs of anemia or tick-borne disease.

Nutrition & Weight Management

Grain-free or regular kibble?

Choose based on allergy status and energy needs; most healthy pets thrive on quality regular kibble.

Only with a vet-approved balanced recipe; unbalanced diets lack critical nutrients.

Use a high-protein, low-calorie diet with weekly weigh-ins; aim for 0.5–2 % weight loss per week.

Treats should stay under 10 % of daily calories; opt for veggies or low-calorie options.

Dogs: 50–60 ml /kg/day. Cats: 40–50 ml /kg/day. Large changes may signal kidney disease or diabetes.

Skin, Coat & Dental Health

Constant itching—parasites or allergy?

We perform a physical exam and skin tests; often combine an 8-week elimination diet with strict flea control.

Oral isoxazoline tablets offer high efficacy and up to 12 weeks’ protection.

Seasonal shedding is normal; sudden hair loss or bald areas need blood work and skin scrapings.

Usually yes; schedule annual professional cleaning and brush your pet’s teeth daily.

Odor, brown debris or persistent head-shaking suggest infection; we confirm with microscopic exam.

Behaviour & Welfare

My dog barks when left alone—what can I do?

Gradual alone-time training, puzzle feeders and positive reinforcement; behaviourist referral if severe.

First rule out FLUTD via urinalysis; then address litter hygiene and follow the “one box per cat + 1” rule.

Physical exam and X-ray confirm arthritis; NSAIDs, omega-3s and joint-support diets help.

Cats are naturally crepuscular; increase daytime play and provide interactive toys to reduce night zoomies.

Short reward-based “stop-and-wait” sessions; head-collar or harness plus trainer support if needed.

Administrative & Lifestyle

What paperwork is needed for international travel?

Microchip, rabies vaccine, rabies antibody titer test and health certificate; start ~3 months in advance.

It offsets costs of emergency surgery and chronic care; compare policies by age, breed and coverage limits.
